Deputy prime minister Angela Rayner has stepped down from government after an inquiry revealed she ignored repeated warnings about her tax arrangements.

In a letter addressed to prime minister Kier Starmer on Friday (5 September), Rayner confirmed her resignation as deputy prime minister, deputy Labour leader and housing secretary following scrutiny of her property transactions. The letter read: "I accept that I did not meet the highest standards in relation to my recent property purchase.
