FCA fake email warning – advice firms urged to be alert

Advisers urged to report scam emails to the regulator

Advisers must remain vigilant in the wake of a recent email sent by scammers posing as the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the regulator and a compliance consultancy has warned.

In an email dated last Thursday (29 May), seen by PA, scammers posed as the FCA's chief compliance officer in an apparent bid to engage with regulated firms. The email stated: "Yesterday, documents were sent for review. Kindly confirm that you got them." The subject line of the email referred to a "code enforcement notice". While the email purported to come from an FCA email address, it instead appeared to have been sent from a Romanian email domain. The email was signed off by FCA chief compliance officer Sarah Levack.
