DB transfer values fall to lowest levels in over one year

Transfer values dipped below £150,000 due to an increase in gilt yields

Defined benefit (DB) transfer values in October 2023 fell below £150,000 for the first time since last September’s Mini Budget, research from XPS Pensions Group has found.

Research from the consultancy's Transfer Value Index revealed as at 19 October, the transfer value of a typical DB pension decreased to £149,100. By the end of the month, the index recovered slightly to finish at £152,000, 3% lower than September, which was the lowest month-end value recorded since the index's inception in 2018. The firm noted the decline in October's transfer values was the result of the continued increase in gilt yields, combined with marginally lower long-term inflation expectations.
