Andy Burnham clarifies stance on Waspi compensation

Burnham called for ‘recompense’ yesterday but now says he accepts final decision has been made

Andy Burnham has clarified his stance on providing compensation for the women against state pension inequality (Waspi) campaign, saying he accepts the final decision has been made despite calling for “recompense” yesterday.

An article in the Financial Times on Wednesday (10 June) reported the mayor of Greater Manchester and Labour candidate in the Makerfield by-election, speaking during a recent hustings event, expressing his support for the campaign for the 3.6 million women born in the 1950s who were affected by changes to the state pension age. Burnham said: "I stick by campaigners that I support. I stuck by the Hillsborough families, I'll stick by the Waspi women because they deserve some recompense for the unfairness."
