'Underperforming' sector does more damage to women over time

The advice and wealth management sector “repeatedly underperforms”, according to Y Tree research, and Y Tree executive director Eliana Sydes has warned that this does more harm to women over time.

The industry "repeatedly underperforms" despite the majority of clients believing their investments performed well, Sydes told Professional Adviser. This includes in terms of its benchmarks, promises and transparency, Sydes said. For example, Y Tree's Plugged into Wealth Management 2026 report, research analysing 550 portfolios across 110 providers, found that 84% of wealth managers underperformed in 2025 and the average wealth manager reported underperformance of 4.3% against an investible risk-equivalent benchmark.
