While property can form an important part of retirement planning it would be unwise to think a pension income can be replaced by downsizing. Andrew Tully takes a look at the facts

If I had £1 for every time I've heard someone say 'my property is my pension', I'd have enough money to retire in comfort. There is no doubt that residential property in the UK has been an exceptionally good investment over the last 10 years or so and owning an asset which you can see and touch can appear simple compared to other investment vehicles such as pensions. However, much thought needs to be taken to work out whether downsizing your home when you reach retirement is a sensible option, and will it generate enough cash to let you live the retirement of your dreams?
