If you (like me) found yourself stuck navigating the rail network home this week – think unwell passengers, cancellations, strenuous delays, water shortages and, when it worked, juddering aircon with drips so refreshing that you held off questioning the water quality of the soggy puddle forming in your hair – you might be feeling a tad more optimistic about the chap who has put so much work into Manchester’s transport network taking charge than you were on Monday.
That said, this is a financial advice publication, and – as much as my sun-mushed brain is struggling to countenance it this very spicy Friday – there's a lot more at stake when it comes to the stability of the UK than just the quality of its transport links and their ability to cope in admittedly extreme heat.
