Reeves promises to not 'return back to austerity' in pre-Budget message

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has emphasised her promise to take “the fair and necessary choices” to deliver change and pledged not to “return Britain back to austerity” in a pre-Budget message.

Reeves – who will deliver her second Budget at 12:30pm today (26 November) – also said she would not "lose control of public spending with reckless borrowing" and will take action to cut debt. "There is nothing progressive, nothing fair, about spending £1 in every £10 of government spending, just servicing the national debt", she added. Highlighting continued plans to invest in infrastructure, defence, education and the NHS, the chancellor said she will push ahead with "the biggest drive for growth in a generation". Notably, there was no mention of any much-speculated tax increases...
