Nearly half of advised HNW clients unaware of CGT allowance

Nearly half (49%) of advised high net worth (HNW) individuals either do not fully understand, have not heard of, or do not know what the capital gains tax (CGT) allowance is, according to research from Charles Stanley, part of Raymond James Wealth Management.

The research was conducted by Censuswide, among a sample of 2,001 28+ HNWI between 1 September and 8 September 2025. Just 37% of HNWs said they make the most of the CGT allowance, while 32% said they think they can take advantage of the allowance but do not know if they are or not, and 12% said they do not think the allowance applies to them. A further 12% said they do not make the most of it. Similar lack of understanding or usage applied when it came to allowances related to inheritance tax (IHT).
