More than half of Brits want IHT abolished

More than half (54%) of Brits now want a complete abolition of inheritance tax (IHT), marking a slight increase on last year (49%), according to a YouGov poll commissioned by law firm Kingsley Napley.

The firm said opposition to "tougher" IHT rules has increased since this time last year, despite the state of the public finances. The results also found that 76% of Brits now oppose an increase in the current 40% rate at which IHT is levied, up from 69% in September 2024, while 67% favour raising the £325,000 threshold at which IHT must be paid, compared to 64% last year.
