Reeves eyes landlord tax raid in Autumn Budget

To address £40bn hole in public finances

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is reportedly considering applying National Insurance (NI) to rental income in the Autumn Budget.

Treasury officials are reported to be considering the option as Reeves looks to fill a black hole of up to £40bn in the public finances, The Times reported. The Resolution Foundation, a think tank previously headed by pensions minister Torsten Bell, floated the idea last September. Bell is now helping Reeves with Budget preparations, The New Statesman reported. Labour pledged not to raise income tax, NI or VAT in its general election manifesto.
