Alexander: tax changes will make work pay

Changes to income tax that came into effect over the weekend will make work pay, according to Lib Dem minister Danny Alexander.

The chief secretary to the Treasury said the increased personal allowance - which now stands at £9,440 - would help "people working hard on ordinary incomes". However, Labour's Ed Ball said the changes - which will also see the top rate of income tax fall from 50p to 45p in the pound for those earning more than £150,000 - was a "giveaway" for the rich, the BBC reports. Speaking on Radio 4 the shadow chancellor said working families could end up being £4,000 worse off, while millionaires get average tax cuts of £100,000.
