Johnson quits as shadow Chancellor

Alan Johnson has resigned as shadow Chancellor citing "personal reasons" and will be replaced by shadow home secretary Ed Balls.

Johnson, whose time as shadow Chancellor was overshadowed by a series of gaffes, said he is standing down because of personal reasons just three months after being appointed. "I have found it difficult to cope with these personal issues in my private life whilst carrying out an important frontbench role," he said in a statement. "I am grateful to Ed Miliband for giving me the opportunity to serve as shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer." He added Miliband is proving to be a "formidable leader" of the Labour party. Ed Balls' wife takes over the home affairs brief.
