Labour MP and ex-financial secretary to the Treasury Stephen Timms is recovering in hospital after he was stabbed, police said.

A 21-year-old woman was arrested after the incident at Kingsford Way in Beckton, east London, this afternoon, the BBC reports. It is understood the former minister was attacked during a surgery at his East Ham constituency. A Scotland Yard spokeswoman says: ''Police were called at 3.20pm today following reports a man in his 50s had been stabbed at Kingsford Way, east London. ''Police and ambulance attended.
