Just 40% of the UK's 3.4m small enterprises (SMEs) have set aside sufficient funds to cover their corporation tax payments ahead of the deadline, according to research by Alliance & Leicester Commercial Bank.
The research follows a hike in corporation tax for small businesses in April this year and plans to hike rates again over the next two years. The research shows some businesses cannot afford the bill as 19% of companies that have not set aside extra funds say they cannot because of the number of late payments owed to them at any one time. The results also reveal a trend to leave things until the last moment as more than one third of businesses questioned wait until close to their specific deadline before making preparations.
