Johnson to head up DWP

Alan Johnson MP has just been announced as the new Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.

Departure of Andrew Smith MP earlier this week from the role has prompted a cabinet reshuffle, which now sees the Kingston-upon-Hull based former Minister of State for Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education at the DfES take the top job at the DWP. He was previously general secretary of the Union of Communication Workers and became joint general secretary between 1995 to1997. Malcolm Wicks MP is still thought at this time to be Pensions Minister.
