It's now illegal to send unsolicited emails

It is illegal, under EU legislation, to send unsolicited emails or text messages to consumers.

Under the terms of the EU Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive, companies can still be sent unsolicited or 'spam' emails providing it contains an opt-out clause. But the practice of sending 'spam' emails to consumers is no longer allowed from Thursday 11th December. Anyone who sends such emails can be fined up to £5,000 and can now be sued by the recipient.IFAonline
