Mortgage debt advice requests up 50%

The number of people seeking advice for mortgage arrears has increased by 50% over the past three months, according to the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).

It has called on lenders to treat their customers fairly to ensure they can stay in their homes and manage their debt problems. In the twelve months to the end of September 2008, the CAB saw a 35% rise in secured loan and mortgage enquiries, to 77,324, compared with the previous year. However, the increase in enquiries has shot up quickly in the past quarter, with a 51% increase between July and September 2008 compared with the same period a year ago.
