The UK voted to leave the European Union by a margin of 1.2 million votes on 23 June 2016. Since then, politicians have debated the merits of a ‘soft Brexit', a ‘hard Brexit' and even a ‘red, white and blue' Brexit, all without providing much substance or guarantees of any kind. In June, the UK faced the first general election since the Brexit vote. The election was called by the Conservatives in an attempt to give Prime Minister Theresa May a greater majority in the house of commons to "strengthen her hand" in the Brexit negotiations.
