The UK witnessed a surprise election result last night. Despite being consistently ahead in the polls, the Conservatives failed to secure an overall majority, leaving the country with a hung parliament.

Theresa May's party lost 12 seats overall, bringing it down to a total of 318 seats and leaving it eight seats short of an overall majority. The Labour party meanwhile gained 29 seats, bringing it up to a total of 261 seats in Parliament. With talk of the Tories forming an informal coalition with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn calling for May to resign, it remains unclear what the state of UK politics will look like over the coming months.
