A perfect solution in an imperfect world?

The multi manager sector is flourishing. This year alone M&G in conjunction with Cazenove, Schroders, and Solus have either launched or re-launched multi manager products, adding to a growing sector which already contains products from names such as Credit Suisse, Insight, Hendersons and Artemis. The sector is thought to be the fastest growing asset class in the UK, and the belief is that within three years multi manager could account for 30 per cent of assets under management.

So is the sector simply 'flavour of the month', or does it offer a sensible, affordable and practical solution for people who wish to invest for the long term? What is indisputable is that multi manager funds can provide professional portfolio management to a wider range of investors than ever before.

Many investors, in particular those with less experience got carried away on the wave of unprecedented returns in the 1990s and have subsequently been shocked by the ensuing bear market. Expectations of continually high returns based on historical performance and little understanding of volatility has forced such investors into feeling frustrated and let down, often resulting in early, ill-timed redemption.

Current investor despondency is made worse by the fact that so many people invested just before and during the over-inflated markets of early 2000. Many investors are still holding single sector or themed funds launched on the back of the bandwagon during this time and are sitting on heavy losses. And whilst it is true that a unit trust is in itself a means of diversification, holding just one or two specialist unit trusts may not go far enough. Whilst very experienced clients may be used to investigating and making decisions about their investments there are many more who have neither the time, the inclination, nor the necessary expertise to do so.

This is where the Artemis Premier Funds Service, a discretionary portfolio management service which is free to invest in all available funds within the market place, can play such an important role.

One of the most advantageous aspects of the product is its simplicity – Investors, working with their advisers, are simply required to choose one of five Strategies available: Balanced, Growth, Conservative, International, Ethical. The underlying funds are constantly reviewed and changed when necessary, so clients are unlikely to find poorly performing funds in their portfolios. Investors (and advisers) can be sure that the Strategies are structured to avoid over-diversification or being overly focused in one direction.

The Service can also accommodate ISA and PEP investment through specially managed multi manager funds making consolidation possible.

Advisers and investors using the Premier Funds Service have access to dedicated full time portfolio management and the intensive research that that entails. Ever-increasing regulation and compliance issues due to changes at the FSA, Sandler's review and the Trustee Act 2000, all contribute to a more demanding job for advisers, leaving less time for them to concentrate on financial planning. Delegating investment decisions to an expert such as the team behind the Artemis Premier Funds Service makes sense under these conditions. Advisers can also establish a regular income through renewal commission.

In addition, the Artemis Premier Funds Service benefits from an efficient and cost-effective administration process, and the economies of scale allow us to negotiate competitive charges on the underlying funds.

The Artemis Premier Funds Service adds value by offering high quality performance and tax reporting, flexibility, and a dedicated client services team. It has been in existence since 1995 with continuity of management since 1998, making it one of the more established multi manager products available.

Professional portfolio management has been available for some time, but high minimum investment levels meant such services were out of reach for most people. However, it is vital that investors consider their future finances. The last three years have destroyed consumer confidence. This trend needs to be reversed and investors must be educated and supported. The Artemis Premier Funds Service offers a practical solution by making portfolio management a possibility to a greater number of investors than before.

The Service is easy for investors to understand and simple for their advisers to operate. Sales aids and documents that help you explain the Service to your clients, along with brochures, trustee forms and sales presentations are all available from our website.
