It has been a volatile period in bond markets, with unorthodox fiscal policy in the US destabilising the country's sovereign debt. Inevitably, reverberations have been felt around the world. For investors, this is an uncomfortable environment for the supposedly stable part of a portfolio — like an accountant father-in-law suddenly taking up the saxophone and wearing leather.
