In the second of his short series of articles offering advisers who do not specialise in protection an introduction to group risk, Paul Avis looks at the market's size, typical clients and the claims it pays

A 4.5% increase in employees covered in 2016 led to a 3.8% increase in premiums in 2016, which means that - as of the end of last year - Group Risk insurers provided protection for 12,029,790 people and the industry turned over £2.1bn in premiums. As an industry, group risk a massive success story, having already grown by an additional 821,000 employees from 2012 to 2015. Continuing this, in 2016 almost 520,000 more gained the benefits of cover. That is amazing for a single year, so surely we are the envy of every other financial services sector?
