With an increasing number of supermarkets offering insurance cover such as life and mortgage payment protection, one would expect demand to increase over the coming months.

However there is a danger that consumers will buy unsuitable policies because they have not been given adequate advice at the point of sale. Advisers are in a great position to offer this much-needed advice when arranging a mortgage or remortgage for their clients or as a cross-sell to past mortgage clients. The supermarkets would no doubt dispute that the consumer needs advice and that if they are exposed to off-the-shelf solutions they are more likely to consider cover, but will it be the right cover?
