Treasury Committee asks for veto of any government-appointed FOS chair

To ‘guard against political influence’

Members of the Treasury Committee have requested the right to veto any chair of the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) appointed by the government, in a bid to guard against political influence in the resolution of consumer complaints.

A veto is needed to "enhance FOS independence" following proposed changes to the process for appointing the chair of the FOS, the chair of the Treasury Committee Dame Meg Hillier said in a letter to the Economic Secretary to the Treasury Lucy Rigby. The Committee's intervention follows the recent publication by the Treasury of its consultation response on its FS Sector Strategy:  Review of the Financial Ombudsman Service.
