Low-cost platforms spur one in three UK adults to invest

The number of UK adults investing has risen from one in four adults in 2020 to one in three today, with an increasingly competitive investment platform landscape attracting a growing share of first-time investors.

According to Boring Money's tenth annual Online Investing Report, 13.4 million DIY investment accounts were open by the end of 2025 – a 19.2% increase year-on-year. DIY investment account numbers have increased almost fourfold from the 3.6 million in 2016, while 20% of UK adults now hold a Stocks and Shares ISA, up from 13% in 2020. When asked what matters most when selecting a platform, 55% of investors cited low annual costs as the single biggest factor, largely unchanged from a year ago.
