Romance scam reports jump by 1,000 during lockdown - Action Fraud

Action Fraud received more than 1,000 more reports relating to romance scams in 2020 than it did in 2019, Professional Adviser can reveal.

According to information requested by PA, Action Fraud received 6,758 reports of romance fraud in 2020. Victims reported losing £68,204,667 during this time. In 2019, Action Fraud received 5,730 reports of romance fraud and of those victims, £63,449,592 was reportedly lost. The presence of online scams has increased in recent years, most recently as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.  On Tuesday (13 April), PA revealed that Morgan & Williams financial adviser Daniel Williams had to tell a client that he had been the victim of an online romance scam.  The client, a 75-year old...
