A general election will be held on 12 December after MPs backed the prime minister's call for the country to go to the polls.

The general election follows months of Brexit deadlock in Westminster. MPs backed the election call by a margin of 438 to 20. It is the first December election since 1923, according to the BBC. The prime minister has said the public must be "given a choice" over the future of Brexit and the country. The Budget, originally scheduled for 6 November, is now on hold. Fiscal analysis from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) is still set to be released on November 7.
