A 49-year old financial adviser from Cardiff stands accused of defrauding his own mother out of £137,000 and using the cash to fund his gambling.

Geraldine Haydock, who is in her 70s, believed her son Simon Haydock was investing the money on her behalf but the adviser spent it "as he liked", saying it was a gift from his mother, jurors at Newport Crown Court heard. The BBC reported the court also heard he paid money to the betting company Betfair, spent tens of thousands of pounds with spread betting company IG Index and transferred tens of thousands of pounds to his wife. Within a month, he only had around £9,000 left of the £137,338.62 his mother had given him to invest on her behalf after selling a property in 2010, the jury...
