Budget 2018: Chancellor pledges £650m boost for social care

Chancellor Philip Hammond has revealed an additional £650m boost for local authorities for social care - though some commentators dismissed it as little more than a "sticking plaster measure".

Speaking this afternoon (29 October), Hammond said: "There will be another £650m of grant funding for English councils for 2019/20 and an additional £45m for the disabled facilities in England in 2018/19." He also pledged a further £84m over the next five years to expand children's social care programmes to 20 further councils. Aegon pensions director Steven Cameron suggested the £650m commitment would offer "some relief to councils struggling with ever increasing demands" but amounted to "little more than a temporary, sticking plaster measure".
