HMRC hauls in 'record' £29bn in tax crackdown

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has collected an extra £29bn from its crackdown on tax dodgers, according to its 2016/17 annual report.

The taxman gathered a total £574.9bn in 2016/17 - a £38bn increase on the previous year - marking a seventh consecutive year of record total tax revenues for the government department. It reported it had brought more than 500 serious organised criminals to justice over the last six years and handled more than 1,200 cases in courts and tribunals, winning 83% of them and protecting £15bn in tax revenues.
