Ombudsman orders compensation for pensioner over 'loss of expectation'

The Pensions Ombudsman (PO) has awarded a pension fund member £500 after he suffered "a loss of expectation" over the amount of his pension.

Deputy PO Jane Irvine was adamant the compensation was ordered for distress caused to the deferred member, but that it was not "for any perceived loss of pension". John Atkinson left his employment at EMI in May 1983 and was entitled to a deferred pension at his normal retirement age of 60 in May 2007, but chose not to take it until August 2013. He believed he would get an annual pension of £9,540 from the fund but this was revised down to £8,878 after changes to the scheme's late retirement calculations.
