Rule change means bosses can ditch NEST

Changes to the legislation governing the operation of the National Employment Savings Trust (NEST) is to allow employers to leave the scheme.

A Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) consultation has proposed changes to the NEST order to make sure if operates efficiently as auto-enrolment progresses. One such change is the permission for employers to opt-out of the scheme. The consultation said: "There is nothing which states or necessarily implies that an employer who participates can leave. In practice, an employer may cease to pay contributions in respect of a member and decide that they wish to leave.
