Aviva confirms McFarlane will be chairman

John McFarlane, previously CEO of Australian banking giant ANZ, is being lined up to replace Lord Sharman of Redlynch as chairman of Aviva in June next year.

The company announced today McFarlane will become a non-executive director in September before becoming deputy chairman on 1 January next year. Six months later, at the end of June, he will take up the position of chairman. Aviva said McFarlane will step down from the board of the Royal Bank of Scotland by 31 March 2012 and relocate from Australia to the UK. Lord Sharman of Redlynch, chairman of Aviva, said: "John McFarlane's extensive experience as both an executive and non-executive director in international financial services will be invaluable to Aviva."
