Tory plans to raise the nil-rate inheritance tax (IHT) band to £1m are unlikely to survive a Lib Dem-Conservative coalition, warns Legal & General (L&G).

A rise in the nil-rate band to a £1m allowance per person and £2m for couples has been part of Tory proposals since 2008. But with today's poll result showing a hung parliament, the expectation is that despite winning the most seats the Tories will be forced into a coalition with the Lib Dems, in which they will have to sacrifice some key policy stances if they are to form a unity Government.
