FOS complaints continue to soar

The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) has been forced to upscale its workload figures as the number of new complaints continues to rise.

FOS now expects to deal with 160,000 cases for 2009/10, exceeding its previous estimate of 150,000. Further ‘substantial' rises are forecast for the 2010/11 financial year, with the number of new complaints expected to hit 190,000. However, the FOS says even this estimate could prove to be too conservative. Interim chief executive at FOS David Thomas says: "We have also planned for a more pessimistic assumption of 228,000 new cases.
