Dow climbs on upbeat Alcoa earnings

The Dow Jones has risen 23.84 points (0.58%) to 8183.40 after the US aluminium giant Alcoa revealed better than expected results.

Alcoa made the largest gain, up 2.64% to $9.71 after its Q2 results, which were released yesterday, were not as bad as analysts had forecasted previously.  Caterpillar Inc is up 1.50% to 31.04. However, pharmaceutical companies suffered after making gains on Wednesday.  Merck & Co tumbled 0.77% to $27.27 while Johnson & Johnson slipped 0.55% to 56.53. The FTSE was up 26.25 points (0.63%) to 4166.48 shortly before 3.30pm.  Mining companies led the gains, with silver miner Fresnillo up 9.60% to £4.85 after being upgraded to "buy" by Citigroup.  Vedanta Resources also went up 64 points (...
