MPC member dies

An external member of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has unexpectedly died following a short illness.

David Walton, who was 43, was the only member at the last MPC meeting at the beginning of June, to vote in favour of a rise in interest rates by a quarter of a percent. He was appointed as an external member of the MPC on 1 July 2005 following a career which included work as an economist at the Treasury between 1984 and 1986, before joining Goldman Sachs as chief european economist. The Bank of England revealed the news in a statement issued today, saying it is with “great sadness the Bank has learned David Walton died yesterday evening, unexpectedly and after a short illness”.
