The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) has provided further reaction to the National Landlords Association's (NLA) commnets that new licensing for houses of multiple occupation(HMO) will stifle the buy-to-let sector.
As reported yesterday the NLA is concerned that HMO licensing cause significant problems to buy-to-0let investors wishing to sell a property or de-convert a property into a single dwelling. Gavin McGuire, a spokesman for the ODPM, says: If a property is granted a licence as an HMO the licence will specify the maximum number of occupants which may be housed in the property. It does not require the property to be let to that number of tenants and if the landlord chooses to let to fewer people he may do so.
