Insurers use fear to upsell to HNWIs

Insurers are leveraging the fear of stalking, road rage, burglary and kidnap to attract high net worth customers, according to a survey published by consultant Datamonitor.

However, analysis of risk shows such customers actually have little genuine need for such cover, Datamonitor adds. James Greenwell, financial services analyst at Datamonitor says: "Insurers are using new covers as low-risk product differentiators in what is an increasingly competitive market, safe in the knowledge that they will rarely have to pay out on such claims.” Datamonitor bases its analysis of risk on Home Office figures, which show “no trend towards stalking, car jacking and aggrevated burglary”.
