Some £16bn of additional taxpayers' money will be used to meet upgraded government targets for supplying social and private housing, and to meet needs of Southeast residents in particular.

That much is known following this week’s public spending review announcements. However, what is not known – because the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister is not yet saying – is just how the new total of £38bn committed to housing and associated infrastructure and community “planning” will be spent, or even whether the new sums are enough to meet political commitments. Additional comment from the ODPM press office following on from yesterday’s publication of housing targets has elicited the following response: "We’ve got 900,000 homes in our current regional planning guidance.” ...
