Record numbers taking out PMI cover - ABI

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has updated its consumer guide on private medical insurance (PMI) as new figures reveal a record number of people have taken out the policies.

The ABI says the guide will help to improve consumer knowledge of the benefits of the insurance – designed to cover treatment for ‘curable, short-term illness or injury’ – and help them make the right decisions when taking out a policy. The number of people covered by PMI broke the six million mark for the first time in five years, the ABI adds. It says that, in 2007, a total of 6,004,000 people were covered by either personal or corporate PMI, with a further 1,136,000 covered through healthcare trust arrangements.
