John Husselbee: A bad dose of acronym fever

A recent comment from a journalist on Twitter asking whether, in a world where 'ASR backs ESG EMD ETF' is a feasible headline, we may have reached peak acronym, writes John Husselbee.

Finance has perennially been a world beset by these collections of letters, with ‘FAANG' - covering the fast-growing tech names in the US of Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google ­- among the most recent additions to the canon. But while such terms quickly become commonplace, I would suggest many simply encapsulate short-term fads and fashions and can lead investors into potentially risky waters.
