The matter of one's right to sell back their annuity has been a short but eventful roller coaster. First it was mooted, as many things are, by Steve Webb, then the sector said it was a non-starter. At least most of the sector did. Then it was up for discussion once again and, finally, George Osborne shut us all up by confirming it in the Budget. The inspiration appears to be the ‘freedom' platform: one is free not to buy an annuity (or free to buy one) and also free to sell it back again, though probably not to your original provider.
