While not one of the items listed by the Monty Python team, I think it's correct to say that sunset provisions have their roots in Roman law; being defined as meaning that after a specific date a provision within statute or regulation shall cease to have effect. This is exactly the situation we are facing with regards to platform legacy assets and the requirement for rebates to platform operators to end before 6 April 2016.
