We did something unusual last week: we invited a living, breathing financial adviser to sit in on this magazine's news and analysis meeting.

Not everybody agreed we should do it. Some felt it unwise to share our ideas, methods and, potentially, sensitive information with a reader ahead of publication. But we did, and here’s why: we don’t know as much as you do. Trade journalism is very different from consumer journalism. In some cases I would argue it is more difficult. After all, we are all consumers, but few of us have plied the trade we write about. I edit this magazine yet I’ve never given financial advice.
