Blog: Are model portfolios a threat to independence?

There have been several press comments recently from organisations questioning whether the use of model portfolios will impact a firm's independent status post RDR.

Central to remaining independent following the RDR is the requirement to consider the whole of the relevant marketplace of which model portfolios are part. Model portfolios should be seen as just one of many solutions available and as long as the adviser follows some simple rules then there should be no threat to his or her independence. Any adviser using a single life company’s model portfolios for the majority of their clients cannot, in my view, be said to be fully independent, now or post RDR.
