Will RDR succeed where the OFT failed? One of the outcomes that the FSA is trying to achieve with the RDR is to have remuneration arrangements that allow competitive forces to work in favour of consumers. Although I didn't enter financial services until many years later, I'm told by ‘more experienced' colleagues that the same principle led the Office of Fair Trading to abolish the maximum commissions agreement back in 1975. Until then, most providers paid a fairly standard rate of commission for any particular product type, but the OFT decided that they could encourage competition ...
