While the chances of fund managers gracing the pages of Hello magazine are thankfully slim, there's no doubt that managers are increasingly being touted as celebrities within our industry.
You only need cast an eye over the glossy ads that dominate IFA trade papers to see what I mean. F&C and Gartmore are two of the worst offenders; regularly shouting from the rooftops about the ability and success of their ‘star’ managers in a bid to capture money from the IFA market. This, in itself, doesn’t especially bother me. I like to think that IFAs are not sucked in by such ads (ie. if the manager is any good they’ll rate him/her anyway) and it shouldn’t affect the manager unless the associated marketing distracts them from their day job of running money.
