I had to listen to the figure again, again and again. I had to read the numbers again, again and again. It couldn't really be true could it - city bonuses hitting £19bn with some young whizz kid traders netting millions in bonuses? But, yes, it appears that 2006 saw an increase of 16% from the previous year in city bonuses.
Of course they work hard, working all hours and undoubtedly bring in their employers hundreds of millions in profit. But still, these are young guys with limited responsibilities, able to walk in to a forecourt and buy a Porsche – cash. Yes, I’m jealous, who wouldn’t be. Let’s put that ridiculous figure into context - £19bn is the equivalent to the country’s entire annual transport budget or, and more relevant to us in the protection world, this figure could pay off last year’s entire NHS deficit almost 16 times over.
